To stay healthy, the bowel needs:

  • Its local immune system to destroy any harmful pathogens;

  • Its flora of friendly bacteria that work to make the bowel inhospitable for unfriendly bacteria;

  • Nutrients to create and feed the cells of its lining, which is the physical barrier between the bowel and the rest of the body;

  • Electrolytes whose proper balance ensures that the stools are not too watery nor too dry.
